A Harrah Oklahoma high school baseball coach was arrested on Thursday and accused of an indecent or lewd act with a Harrah student.
The mother of a 16-year-old student contacted the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office about inappropriate comments, Charles Copeland, 37, had posted about her daughter over the past few months. According to the woman, she had begun to monitor her daughter’s cell phone and found numerous messages that had been exchanged between Copeland, who is a math teacher and coach for the Hannah High School baseball team, and her daughter.
When an Oklahoma County deputy reviewed the text messages and found a number of messages that contained comments such as, “Today did you think about us ‘doing it’ at all?” To which the daughter responded back saying “yes I did right after we kissed a couple of times definitely,” according to a court affidavit. There were text messages that came from Copeland that were far more sexually explicit.
According to the Superintendent of Hannah, Paul Blessington, the situation surrounding Copeland is unfortunate, he added that Copeland has been an “outstanding” coach and teacher in the six years that he has been with the Harrah School district. Blessington went to say that he could not comment on any personnel issues related to Copeland but that the coach has been placed on administrative leave, as would anyone in the school district facing accusations or an investigation.
According to Superintendent Blessington, the school district has launched its own investigation that is independent of the investigation that is underway from the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office.
Coach Copeland just celebrated his 6th winning season as the coach of the Panthers, last year leading the team to a 33-5 record and the Class 4A baseball state championship game for the first time in 43 years. Copeland was also selected to serve as the coach for the Oklahoma Baseball Coaches Association All-State games that are to take place in Enid OK, in June.
Copeland was being held at the Oklahoma County jail Thursday afternoon in lieu of $50,000 bail on a complaint of indecent or lewd acts with a child under 16, jail records show.
